It seems appropriate on International Day of People with Disabilities to reflect on what makes great accessibility.
It’s important to remember that accessibility is not a box to check or a one-time effort. Great accessibility is an ongoing commitment rooted in the principle of continuous improvement. Accessibility is a program, not a project.
The “continuous improvement program” mindset pushes everyone to go beyond compliance and toward inclusion. It’s about listening to the lived experiences of people with disabilities, seeking their input, and using that feedback to create solutions that empower everyone. Accessibility is not static because human needs evolve, technology advances, regulations change, and our understanding of barriers deepens. All accessibility improvements bring us closer to achieving a vision of disability equity.
On #IDPD, ask and honestly answer the questions: What can we do better? Whether you’re an engineer, a designer, a leader, or an ally, embrace the challenge to improve, iterate, and innovate. When products are accessible, lives are transformed. Accessibility should be second nature, and inclusion should be the default.
Alt: The secret to great accessibility is never be satisfied. That’s how you continue to improve.
