Accessibility Meme: Europe has an Accessibility act? Why didn’t anyone warn me?

When laws are passed in the European Union, a long timeline follows, allowing each country to implement its local version. We’ve seen this process with the European Accessibility Act (EAA), which officially passed on June 7, 2019. The EAA will take full effect on June 28, 2025, so organizations have had more than six years to get used to the idea that this law is coming.
Companies have had ample warning—through webinars, newsletters, and countless articles and official notices. Businesses selling in the EU need to fully understand the impact of this act on their products and services. Lack of awareness or preparation won’t be an acceptable excuse once enforcement begins.
The European Accessibility Act (EAA) affects companies selling digital goods, e-commerce platforms, and customer service channels. Key sectors affected include:
Telecommunications – including mobile phones, computers, and digital services
Banking – especially online banking services and ATMs
Transportation – covering ticketing and check-in kiosks
E-commerce – both online shopping platforms and apps
Media and Digital Publishing – websites, e-books, and digital content platforms
Consumer Electronics – like TVs, tablets, and similar devices.
Public Sector Services – online government portals and public information websites
The EAA requires these companies to ensure their products and services are accessible to people with disabilities, aligning with the EU’s commitment to digital accessibility and equal access for all citizens.
Don’t be Forrest Gump and look confused and surprised when June 29th comes next year and your EU sales suddenly go up in smoke!
