It’s #AccessibilityFailFriday again, and we’re still dealing with job application barriers. It will likely be a while before I run out of examples.
Today’s failure is requiring people to choose from a list that doesn’t have an “Other” option.
I have certifications (four of them!) but the list of options didn’t include mine. There was no way to add them. My only choice was to try and mention them in my cover letter and resume, which isn’t an ideal solution, especially if the AI is filtering by what kinds of certifications people have.
Helpful Hint: To turn this AccessibilityFailFriday into an AccessibilityTriumphTuesday, always include an “Other” field in dropdown lists. Not every applicant’s qualifications will fit neatly into predefined categories. This small change can make a huge difference in the application experience for people with diverse credentials. Make sure if you are hiding the field to enter what the “other” is that you use ARIA to inform screen reader users that the field has been exposed.
