WCAG does not apply to packaging. Or does it?
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) set the standard for digital accessibility, not physical items. But consider this: as soon as a web page of that packaging gets created, that web page does need to be compliant, which means the non-compliant packaging colors cannot be used for text.
Design packaging colors and text with accessibility in mind—high contrast, easy-to-read fonts, colorblind safe palettes, and clear information layout. This helps everyone who may view it on a screen. You’re setting your brand up to avoid headaches later on. The effort to adjust packaging for online accessibility after it’s designed for print is costly and time-consuming. Making accessibility part of your initial design ensures that your digital and packaging spaces are inclusive.
The color contrast for the text in this phone (yellow on white and yellow on green) is less than 2 for both uses. Don’t do this. Whether online or off, make every part of your brand accessible.
